We fast to become more of who God has made us to be. We want to remove distractions and focus on the having the Spirit of Christ inhabit us. During the “Journey to Becoming” fast, we will have an opportunity to grow individually and, more importantly, as a covenant community as we fulfill the mission of God.

March 17-21 | A Compassionate Witness: Mark 10:21
We want to look at those in our families and our communities who are separated from love and compassion and provide what is missing.
Prayer: Lord, I want to see unsaved people as you do.
  • 3/17 – Pray for God to open your eyes for opportunities to share the gospel with your family (parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.).
  • 3/18 – Am I using my God-given gifts, talents and resources to help and support our CBC community? Be specific in your answer and reflection. What could you using God’s gifts look like? How would you be impacted? How would others be changed?
  • 3/19 – Is my presence encouraging? I should be bringing the peace and joy of Christ to each group I’m a part of. I should always strengthen the mission of God.
  • 3/20 – Do I freely give of my time to support God’s mission at CBC using my God-given gifts? If not, where could my gifts be best used?
  • 3/21 – Pray for God to open your eyes for opportunities to share the gospel with your neighbors (those living next door, those in your building, local businesses you frequent, those you know at the gym, those you see on the bus and subway, etc.).
March 24-28 | Agent of Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
We have a desire to be used by God as he seeks to reconcile a fallen world to Himself.
Prayer: Lord, use me in whatever way possible to reconcile people to You.
  • 3/24 – Pray for God to open your eyes for opportunities to share the gospel with your friends (those you hang out with, those you’ve reconnected with on social media, your childhood friends, etc.).
  • 3/25 – Am I empathetic to others? Do I recognize and meet other’s needs? Do I seek to understand before I critique?
  • 3/26 – Who am I discipling? If I need training in how to disciple others, am I seeking that out? God, show me how to do it and give me confidence that I can.
  • 3/27 – Am I encouraging others to rest as they serve God’s kingdom? Do I model someone who brings refreshment to others? Do I step-in so that others can enjoy sabbath times?
  • 3/28 – Pray for God to open your eyes for opportunities to share the gospel with your co-workers (the person who works next to you, your supervisor, the staff at your job, those you kept in touch with after retirement, etc.).
March 31 - April 4 | Willing Servant: Mattthew 25:40
Have a willingness to serve people as a means of bringing the good news of the gospel to others.
Prayer: Lord, show me the ways both big and small you have called me to serve others.
  • 3/31– Revisit your prayers for your family (parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.). Persistent prayer will make us more sensitive to opportunity.
  • 4/1 – Am I seeking new things or old things? Am I holding onto traditions and practices from the past or am I embracing what God will do with our congregation tomorrow?
  • 4/2 – Am I listening to what God wants me to do instead of what I want to do? Are my desires focused on the mission of the God for our community?
  • 4/3 – Do I continuously pray for the future of the church and our community?
  • 4/4 – Am I being receptive in prayer, remaining alert and watchful, to the Holy Spirit’s guidance? Am I ready to be molded into whatever God needs me to be?
April 7-11 | A Worker Approved: 2 Tim. 2:14-17
Make me a fearless witness who is unashamed to declare the truth of God to others.
Prayer: Lord, give me the opportunity to share the hope of the gospel with others.
  • 4/7 - Who am I intentionally focusing on? Am I actively praying for and planning to speak with particular people?
  • 4/8 – Am I afraid to share the gospel? Have I asked God to show me why I’m afraid and to give me courage?
  • 4/9 – Am I confident in the facets of the gospel message? If the opportunity happened right now, would I be able to explain the basics of the gospel message?
  • 4/10 – Do I share my testimony with believers and non-believers? Do I know what my testimony is? Should I speak with someone about how to share my testimony?
  • 4/11 – Am I courageous when sudden unforeseen opportunities arise to share the gospel? What is it that holds me back?
April 14-16 | Reflect on God’s Guidance
Take all the God has been doing in your life over the past four weeks. See how these questions and scriptures work together to make us better at reaching those who are lost and discipling those who have been found.
  • Who has God been laying on your heart?
  • Is there an aspect of your Christian character where God has shown you that you need growth?
  • Is there a step that you can take which furthers the mission?
  • Is there an act of service or a ministry opportunity which you have a vision for?
  • And how do any or all of these insights come from you centering on God?
What is fasting?
Fasting is a discipline of faith. Fasting is when we abstain from something which we normally enjoy or find to be beneficial. In place of the activity, we spend time in prayer, bible reading and reflection to draw closer to God.

Important note: we don’t fast from things that are sinful! Those things should already be in the process of being removed from your life. If you need help overcoming sin, talk to a pastor as soon as possible.
What kind of challenges should I expect?
We will likely experience strong desires to quit our fast. We can also expect powerful temptations and spiritual warfare. Remember the scripture: you can do ALL things through Christ Jesus who gives you strength (Phil 4:13). Overcoming temptations to quit or sin will prove to be an incredible testimony to God’s work in us.
What do I fast from?
There are a few types of fasts that can be done:
  • Food. Don’t eat at all for a certain number of days or only eat during a certain time period (e.g., eight hours to eat, 16 without), sun-up to sun-down (eating only after sundown), or some combination. During the fasting time, only drink water or clear broth.
  • Media/Entertainment Fast. Stay away from any kind of media (social media, television, internet, newspapers, radio, etc) except for what you need to do job-related work. You can combine this with food abstinence also.
  • Selective Fast. This is an option which is particularly good for those who are on medication, or who are too old or young to do another kind of fast. With this kind of fast, we give up foods which are not necessary (sweets, fast food/pizza, wine and alcohol, soda, coffee, etc).
What should I do when I fast?
Once you have decided what you will fast from, you need to add some structure to your process. Each weekday (M-F) will have a question to prompt your prayers and a scripture for reflection. As an example, we’ll assume that you’re fasting from lunch (so your only meals are breakfast and dinner). Your day should look like this:
  • Wake up: Humble yourself before God. Pray for the Holy Spirit to enable, guide and protect you during your fast. Read the scripture for that section and read the question for the day. Pray for God’s insight during the day.
  • Lunchtime: When you would normally eat, reflect on the question more deeply.
  • Spend time considering how the verse relates to the question of the day.
  • If you’re praying for particular people, be specific in how you’re asking God to open doors to conversation with them.
  • If you’re reflecting on a question, be specific in how you answer. Don’t just say “yes, I’m doing this” and move on. Challenge your initial response. If you find that you’re not really doing as well as you thought you were, repent and tell God you’re ready to pursue him more deeply in that area.
  • Close with prayer, thanking God for the time you spent with him.
  • Evening. Before breaking your fast, spend a little more time reflecting on the question. This is a great time to journal your thoughts so you can see your growth over time.
Breaking My Fast
Breaking a fast (which is where we get the name for the first meal of the day) is something to be done carefully. If you’ve been limiting your food, eating excessively and unhealthily can be uncomfortable or harmful. If you’ve been limiting your media, don’t binge watch a series as a “celebration.” You’ve hopefully learned during the fast where you may be overindulging. This is a chance to correct that behavior permanently. Break your fast slowly and treasure the time you’ve been spending with God.
